40 Burgos (continued) - Burgos Castillo

located at the same place as the Mirador del Castillo, the Castillo de Burgos, or Castle of Burgos, is a historic fortress.

The origins of the Castillo de Burgos date back to the 9th century when it was constructed as part of the defensive system to protect the city. Over the centuries, it underwent several modifications and expansions. The castle was the residence of the medieval counts and later the kings of Castile.

The castle is strategically located on a hill, providing a commanding view of the surrounding area and making it an essential defensive structure for the city.

The Castillo de Burgos displays a mix of architectural styles due to the various renovations and modifications it has undergone over the centuries. It features both medieval and Gothic elements, and it played a significant role in the history of Spanish architecture.

The castle served as a royal residence for several Spanish monarchs, including King Alfonso VIII and Queen Beatrice of Swabia, who lived there in the 12th century. Additionally, it was the birthplace of King Alfonso X of Castile.

Over time, the strategic importance of the castle diminished, and by the 18th century, it had fallen into disrepair. During the Peninsular War in the early 19th century, the castle suffered significant damage.
